MY RUN THROUGH LONDON

Last week I was in the UK on business. I managed to get some nice runs in through London. Here are photos I snapped during my run - used my Blackberry so image quality isn't the best:

BADWATER - HERE I COME AGAIN!!!

Well, it is official, I am going back to Death Valley and the Badwater 135 Mile endurance run. I did this run last year and just loved it (although the bottom of my feet hurt so much).

I received the following from the Badwater Race Office:
Hello Alan!
Congratulations! You have been accepted to compete in the 2009 Badwater Ultramarathon, presented by AdventureCORPS, Inc. You are part of a select group who will participate in what is recognized across the globe as the worlds toughest footrace.

The Badwater Ultramarathon describes itself as "the world's toughest foot race". It is a 135 mile (215 km) course starting at 282 feet (85 m) below sea level in the Badwater Basin (the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere), in California's Death Valley, and ending at an elevation of 8360 feet (2548 m) at Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney (the highest point in the Continental U.S.). It takes place July 14, 15 and 16, when the weather conditions are most extreme and temperatures over 120 F (49 C) in the shade are not uncommon. Only up to 90 people are invited to participate each year in this event and I was lucky enough (?) to be invited.

I am already starting to put together my crew and have some great volunteers!! Like last year, I will use my race to raise money for charity. Of course I will fundraise for Badwater's official charity: the Challenged Athlete Foundation.I am using my Badwater Ultramarathon as a means to raise funds for CAF to help it help people with physical disabilities pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and athletics. CAF’s mission is clear: give those with the desire to live active, competitive lifestyles every opportunity to compete in the sports they love.

I would appreciate your help here - any amount will help others realize their goals. Here is my fundraising link: DONATE

I also intend to also try and raise funds to help fight ALS - Lou Gehrig Disease. I will post that information as soon as possible.

I will keep you updated on my training and race developments!

TRAINING RUN ON THE WASHINGTON & OLD DOMINION TRAIL

I was in Sterling, Virginia on business and did my morning run on the W&OD Trail. This is a 44 mile trail in the Northern Virgina Regional Park Authority.

It was a brisk run, with part sof the path still frozen over in ice.

Overall the trail is very wide usually with a paved and a non-paved option running side-by-side.

The path even has stretching posts positioned every now and then.

Overall the scenery of the Virginia woods made for a very nice training run.

BARKLEY TRAINING (ONLY KIND OF)

I found a route on San Bruno Mountain that is 11 miles long and has (very rough estimate) around 2200 feet of climbing. So over 100 miles, that would be about 20,000 feet of climbing - not even close to the Barkley (and much less than some "easy 100 milers). But this route does contain one fairly difficult stretch that rises over 1000 feet in less than 3/4 of a mile...through unmarked trails and overgrown brush that actually drew blood multiple time on my legs. Route is here: "Baby Barkley Jr. Hopeful" I plan on adding one loop a week so that before the Old Pueblo 50 miler on March 7 I would have worked my way up past a 50km run with those climbs. Then I will start adding repeats of the steeper parts.

Here are some photos from that run (complete with the ravens flying opver me waiting for me to fall to the ground).

MY BARKLEY ESSAY

To get into the Barkley 100 mile pain fest, one needs pay $1.60, submit a license plate from their own state and write an essay telling why they should be allowed to run the Barkley (all submitted to RD Laz). "Essay" is a loose term, with some people submitting "Why not?", others sending in a video, etc. Here is my essay:

GREEN SKIN AND PUKE
I am a runner
I am a runner
Bummer - I am a runner

That Barkley I am in!
That Barkley I am in!
I do not like
that Barkley I am in!

Do you like
green skin and puke?

I do not like them,
I am no kook .
I do not like
green skin and puke.

Would you like them
here or there?

I would not like them
here or there.
I would not like them
anywhere.
I do not like
them in Frozen Head Park.
I do not like them.
My race days will be so dark.

Would you like them
in the rain?
Would you like them
while in pain?

I do not like them
in the rain.
I do not like them
while in pain.
I do not like them
in Frozen Head Park.
I do not like them
in the dark.
I do not like green skin and puke.
I do not like such a rebuke.

Would you? Could you?
finish each Barkley loop?
Could I? Would I?
Your head must be full of poop.

Say!
In the dark?
Here in the dark!
Would you, could you, in the dark?

I would not, could not,
in the dark.

Would you, could you, in the rain?
I would not, could not,
in the rain.
Not in the dark. Not in pain.
It is so far. I can not see.
I do not like it while in misery.

You do not like
the Barkley race?

I do not
like it,
briars in my face.

You do not like the Barkley.
So you say.
Try it! Try it!
to your dismay.
Try it and you must pray.

I am now filled with dread.
I will be in great pain in the world of people dead….
per the gospel of St. Luke.
Oh! I do not like green skin or puke.

THE BARKLEY - IT IS OFFICIAL

I just received the official application for Barkley (you are accepted and then you fill out the application). For your reading pleasure, here is the application. I will post my essay soon.

Do Not Read This!
(Okay, go right ahead, but don’t say I didn’t warn you)

Official Entry Form: Barkley 100 Mile

What is it you are looking for in a race? Do you want huge crowds of gushing admirers? How about sumptuous aid stations, with a huge selection of goodies? Do you want to succeed and think of yourself as god-like? Maybe you want sympathy and consolation in the event you should fall short? Perhaps you are seeking well-marked, broad, and smooth footpaths? You might even be seeking an event where your pacer can hold your little hand and coax you thru the rough spots?
Then throw this away and take the Barkley off your race list.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a racing experience that has been compared to being punched in the face for 60 hours, if you truly desire to be bruised, cut, battered, and left to lonesome hopelessness, on godforsaken trails in the middle of no-where, in the middle of the night, this might be the ticket. If you dream of clinging to a rocky hillside in pitch black darkness and/or impenetrable fog, in a freezing downpour, listening to your teeth chatter and wondering exactly where in the hell you are, then this might be just the race for you. If you want to return home to scorn from so-called trail runners without the nads to even read this entry form, you are on the right track. If you want to don your race-shirt at the next event, and have other runners move away from you, for fear they will be contaminated, this is definitely something to consider.

So check your britches, and if you think you see a pair of size XL, stainless steel nads, then go ahead and fill this out and send it in. Then pray that your number don’t come up.

If it does come up, you better go get you some big-boy pants. You’re gonna need ‘em.

I really want to run the Barkley. I have been warned how hard it is. I have been warned that I am entirely responsible for my own safety and well being. I know that I might get hurt out there, but I promise to do everything possible to make my adventure a safe one. I agree to accept the decision of race management, should they deem me unfit to continue. And I agree to reimburse all expenses, should a search or rescue be required on my behalf. If I am stupid enough to attempt the Barkley, I deserve to be held responsible for any result of that attempt, be it financial, physical, mental, or any thing else.
